The Laser Safety Training Program
Lasers are at work in almost every human endeavor, and in some areas
they pose serious hazards if not handled properly or if special precautions
are not taken. The principal laser safety standard, ANSI Z136.1 Standard
for the Safe Use of Lasers (ANSI 1992) mandates training for all users
of Class IIIb and Class IV lasers, and recommends training for all users
of Class II and Class IIIa lasers. The ANSI requirements are echoed to
a great degree by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)
in Publication 8-1.7 (OSHA 1991).
The specific training requirements are a function of the type of
laser user -- for example scientists, engineers, production workers --
as well as the environment in which the laser is used, such as the laboratory,
manufacturing area, medical facility, retail establishment, or service
environment.
Companies with many types of lasers in use in multiple environments
often need to have several training programs in place, each unique to a
specific type of laser or application. This can present an additional strain
on a company's training personnel and on it's financial resources.
Interactive Media Communications, with the participation of leading
experts from IBM and Rockwell Laser Industries, has developed The Laser
Safety Training Program, designed to address ANSI and OSHA guidelines
and provide the essential elements of a comprehensive laser safety training
program.

labeling and certification;
- physiology of the eyes and skin and damage caused by overexposure
to laser radiation;
Tape 2: Low, Medium and High-Powered Lasers (Item # 3608-2)
- characteristics and hazards associated with low and medium powered
lasers and appropriate safety precautions;
- characteristics of high powered lasers, nominal hazard zone, non-beam
hazards, accidents, control measures and safe work practices;
Tape 3: High-Powered Lasers in Manufacturing (Item # 3608-3)
- applications, hazards, and control measures for high-powered lasers
in the manufacturing environment;
Tape 4: High-Powered Lasers in the Laboratory (Item # 3608-4)
- applications, hazards, and control measures for high-powered lasers
in the laboratory environment;
Tape 5: Servicing High-Powered Lasers and Optical Fiber Communications
Systems (Item # 3608-5)
- applications, hazards, and control measures for high-powered lasers
in the service environment;
- control measures and safe work practices for servicing optical fiber
communication systems.
Like the CD-ROM version, IMC's VHS videotape version of the Laser Safety
Training Program contains the same engaging dramatizations of real-life
scenarios with live action video and audio, high quality graphics and animation.
The accompanying Student Workbook (Item # 3051) contains practice
questions and exercises to test the learner's understanding of the material
presented throughout the course, as well as additional reference material.
The program is available as a complete set including all five tapes
and the Student Workbook. (Item # 3608-A5)
